The
region of Cayenne
Visit of Cayenne :
Cayenne is the administrative
and commercial center of F.Guiana.
At the same time, it is a
typical creole town with about 50.000 inhabitants, and half of the entire population of
the country together with the surrounding town. The Fort Cépérou, the place Léopold
Heder, the hotel of the Jésuites, the place of Grenoble, the place des Palmistes, the
colonial hospital, the Franconie Museum, the town hall and the city center are the germs
of Cayenne. The visit of the traditional market, full of exotic odors, as well as the
shopping are some of the activities that no visitor should miss. |

|
The island of Cayenne :
Cayenne
is located on a peninsula as the neighbour residential towns of Rémire- Montjoly (deep
sea harbour) and Matoury (Rochambeau airport). You can reach the large streches of fin
sand, bordered with coco-trees or hemmed in by some promontory rocks, by following the
road of the beach (which leads to it). |

|
The
sea is neither blue nor green since the sludge of the Amazone river is carried by the
courants up to the Venezuela border. On an other hand, the sea is almost not polluted and
its temperature is great. The engraved rocks give witness to the period of time when the
district was occupied by important groups of amerindian people. With the arrival of the
white man, sugar cane production started to develop. Now you can find the vestige of one
of those farms, "l'habitation Vidal". |
The Gabriel creek and the
Fourgassié waterfalls:
Lacated
at about 20km in the south of Cayenne, the Gabriel creek with its progression through the
thick vegetation is an excellent sample of the amazonian scenery. you will be able to
admire the morphos (beautifull butterflies with amazing colors). |
The ascent and descent of the river will be quietly done by pirogue. A "stop
planteur" (creole cocktail made up from rhum) is planed at the bourgade of Eskhol.
There, you will discover and be explained the local vegetation and "abatis".
The
pause for the lunch is planed at the auberge of the Fourgassié waterfalls located
upstream on the Mahury river.
The lunch, made of local
products (vegetables, fruits and wild) is served in a warm and welcoming athmospere.
After the meal, a short walk
to the waterfalls of Fourgassie where you will find fresh and clear water great for a
swim. |

|
The zoo of Macouria :
There,
you will discover in a well arranged environment, a large range of guianese animals. Such
animals are normaly very hard to see, but here you will enjoy to see some jaguars, black
caymans (alligators, the biggest in the world), monkeys, snakes, tapirs, giant otter, ara
parrots, anteaters....
There is also a brasilian
restaurant and a bar. |
The marsh of Kaw (individuals or groups 12 persons maximum) :
Roura is a little town located at
about 20km from Cayenne. From this town you can take the road which follows the crest of
the Kaw's "mountain" during 50km until you get to the natural reserve of the
Kaw's marsh. |
 |
| The
marsh of Kaw has a surface of hundreds of square kilometers and it's one of the main
observation points of birds an black caymans, some young and inoffensive specimens of
which can be observed during the night discovery by pirogue.
The proposed trips will allow you to
discover the marsh by day as well as by night or both with a night in carbet/hammocks. |
| These trips may be in pirogue for
the afternoon and the evening.
Other versions are in totallity on the marsh, with meals and lodging on a floating carbet and the night fauna will be observed in
pirogue.
A brand new type of discovery of the marshes is propose on a 12 seats catamaran
witch offers the pleasure of having meals and drink during the trip, by enjoying the
environment. |

Cacao, the H'mong
village :The H'mongs are refugees from Laos who run away from the civil
war of their country. |
They have
been settled in F.Guiana for the past 15 years. Since the time they arrived in the
country, they reproduced their original way of life and kept their traditional culture
(dances, craft, newyear).
They
became the main producers of fruits and vegetables on the guianes markets. They even
adapted on their new ground some fruits from their originative country.
The visit of this asian village of
1.000 people can be done in one day, preferably on sunday (market), with a rental car or
in coach (groups). You will be able to enjoy a laotian meal in a restaurant just over the
river.
Several
excursions combining
dugout, trekking and discovery activities are proposed
starting from Cacao, in 1 or 2 days on the river Comté, but also on the track of
Bélizon, historical golden searches path, in 5
days. |
